Syrnargar Mill
General Information
The mill is owned and run by the Mored family. Nalem 'Blyspuhn' [Trans: Red Hammer] Mored is the head of the family and it is he that supervises all work that goes on in the mill. His wife, Oi, takes care of the finances and runs a general store selling most of the day to day items that can't be made or grown in the village from a shop in her office. Their son Thrato constructs and repairs carts in the mill courtyard. His stock in trade is the handcarts used by miners in the mine but he can make a serviceable wagon for normal road use as well. Mored and Oi's other sons, Bofic and Konar work in the mine.
1. Workshop & Entrance
This is Thrato's workshop as well as the entrance to the mill. Nalem ensures that Thrato keeps all his lumber and materials out of the way as much as possible as the heavy handcarts can be awkward to move around in the confined space of the mill. Nalem takes samples from each cart which he analyses in his small laboratory. The carts are then wheeled into the main mill hall.
2. Office & General Store
This is where Oi sells goods that cannot be grown or made in the village. They are stored in the cellar to which only she has a key. Salt, flour, spices and cloth are the staples of her trade.
This is also Nalem's office. Here he keeps records of the assays he takes from each cart, maps of the mine shafts, records of payments made and other such documents.
3. Mill Hall
This large room open to the roof with a wooden gallery around three sides is a hive of activity all day and night. A huge trip hammer powered by water flowing through the mill race makes a deafening racket as it pummels the boulders into gravel. The rock is then shovelled into a firepit in which dwells a fire elemental named Ulorz. In return for processing the ore he gets to eat a tenth of all the metals and gems. The father of the current mayor paid a the wizard Brogath to summon Ulorz and bind him to the Material Plane. The village is still paying the wizard a further tenth of all precious metals and gems that they extract from the rock. This shipment is collected by the wizard's servents once a month and can amount to a sizeable fortune when the going is good. The dwarves do not object to this as the gems do not get broken or damaged by the process and the precious metals extracted by Ulorz are very pure and he never needs to rest.
4. Scriptorium
Nalem needs accurate maps to predict where to dig next, he needs accurate records of the metals and gems extracted from the mine and he has a quartet of scribes and cartographers working hard producing these documents. The tall, broad windows give the room a light airy feel. The door to the gallery is kept closed at all times to prevent soot and fumes from damaging the scrolls.
5. Gallery
The smell of brimstone from Ulorz taints the air in this gallery that overlooks the main hall. Nalem spends a little time here each day checking that his business is running smoothly.
6. Meeting Room
This is where Nalem holds business meetings. The chests hold scrolls, a small amount of coinage and uncut gems. The bookcases hold more maps and records of the mine. A secret button beneath the northern sconce causes a ladder to emerge from the wall which gives access via a secret trapdoor in the ceiling to the loft.
7. Secret Loft
This low ceilinged room has a very solid wooden floor. It is here that Nalen holds most of the gold, platinum, silver and uncut gemstones. Only he and his wife knows how to access the loft.
Adventure Hooks
- Something Went Down The Wrong Way
- As a joke a young dwarf fed something to Ulorz that doesn't agree with the fire elemental.
Now he has subsided into his fire pit and nobody knows what is going to happen. Will he explode? Will he die? Will he return to the Plane Of Fire? Someone needs to find Brogath and persuade him to help.
- Breach of Contract
- An emissary of the wizard Brogath arrives in the village to enquire as to why the payments have stopped. It appears that somewhere between the village and the wizard the gold and gems are going missing. Is it simply orcish raiders or something more sinister? Either the payments restart or Ulorz will be sent back to the Plane Of Fire.
