Javalandaria

History

Javalandaria was born into a poor family and brought up in the Iymrae Woods some 260 years ago, when the Undrar Peninsula was part of the Empire. He has seen many changes and when he can his songs and tales tell of them.

His birth was both tragic and mysterious. His mother who unusually for an elf had already given birth to five other children died as Javalandaria took his first breath. To the horror of the midwife Javalandaria's mother changed into a pile of melting snow upon the bed. In his grief and anger Javalandaria's father vowed not to rest until he discovered who was responsible for this. At the same time the few gold coins and ornaments that Javalandaria's family possessed transmuted into lead further reducing the families wealth. In the chaos of his birth it was a while before anyone noticed the bat shaped birthmark that covered Javalandaria's face.

As a child he showed a love for music and the arts and his father and step-mother encouraged him, as most elven parents would do. His father, a warrior for the emperor, obsessed about the curse placed upon his first wife became more moody and introverted as years went by and nothing came to light.

While still a young child by elven standards he accidentally desecrated a shrine to the goddess Berei while out playing. Despite his protestations of innocence some devout followers shunned him and his family for many years. In an attempt to make it up to them he joined them in worship at the shrine and received a vision that in the future he would be asked to carry out a sacred but dangerous mission for Berei. This led to Javalandaria meeting with a gnomish cleric who persuaded him to become a cleric before the gnome continued on his wanderings. Javalandaria was still unpopular with certain members of the religious hierarchy and when he started to make unpopular prophetic statements he was asked to leave, not only the shrine but the community as a whole.

He wondered the forest and the lands beyond for several years, using his musical skills to pay for food and lodging and his minor healing abilities made him a popular visitor. But always in the back of his mind was the dangerous but unspecified mission that had been laid upon him. Something always happened to him when he had been in one place to long. A mysterious fire, an untimely death or something of value going missing that was blamed on the travelling bard and so he had to move on again. In one of these villages, a girl he had grown very fond of suddenly turned on Javalandaria and tried to kill him before disappearing. Of course he was blamed for the girl's disappearance and was hounded out of town.

As the villages he could stay in became fewer and fewer Javalandaria travelled further and further afield. He learnt to fight first with sword and bow in the many small militias kept by the minor lords in their petty wars for land before travelling across the Straits and serving for a time in an army of an Imperial Warlord. Here he learnt to use a spiked whip with deadly effect.

He had no power to sway the Emperor when he decided to withdraw his armies from the peninsula. No reason was ever given for the withdrawal and it would be many years before Javalandaria could return across the straits to his home. Little did Javalandaria know that this delay probably saved his life.

It was many years later, while he was still in the Empire he learnt that all male elves born in the woods in the year of his birth had been put to death shortly after the Empire's forces had been withdrawn. When he learnt of this he asked permission to leave the Emperor's service and this was granted willingly. Javalandaria had proved his worth to two Emperors and the third felt it would be asking too much of the elf to keep him on any longer.

Since his return Javalandaria has been searching for the reason why the his kindred were slain, what Berei has in store for him and what he can do to bring the Empire back to the peninsula. To this end he has travelled as a bard, telling tales and searching for information. He has gathered a following of like minded humans and elves to help him.

Description

Javalandaria has the ageless look of all elves and this is enhanced by his tousled blond hair and chirpy smile. The most striking feature about his appearance however is the drak red, bat shaped birthmark that covers most of his face, he used to disguise it with stage make-up but once he entered the service of the emperor he let it show as it made people uncomfortable and easier to distract and get information out of. He is slim and short but this hides a wiry toughness.
